News: More pharmacists in GP surgeries
In July 2015, NHS England launched a pilot scheme that involved the recruitment of 490 pharmacists into GP surgeries with aim of increasing capacity in general practice and freeing up GP time with a particular focus on helping manage and support patients who take medications for chronic diseases. The pilot scheme was an apparent success, with NHS England doubling financial investment into the scheme less than 6 months later.
Now, NHS England has announced a further expansion which will see another 1500 pharmacists working in general practice by 2020-2021. The next round of applications is set to open in January 2017 and will likely provide many pharmacists with an exciting and challenging opportunity to pursue a different career path in pharmacy.
